Pelican's Whimper in 0-3 defeat to Ouzo

Posted by Josh Abebe at May 26, 2010 7:10AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

I had a long detailed description of the match written up, but for some reason, Mr. Teampages deleted it, so now I’m going to write this one.
The Pelican’s limped out of the season after a 0-3 loss to Ouzo on 5/16. They ended the match prematurely, like a freshman hooking up at a frat party for the first time (please tell me that happened to someone else…).
The first 45 minutes of the match were a 50/50 draw in time of posession. The first half ended 0-0, and the Pelican’s went into the half enthused and ready for the mass of goals that they would encounter at the beginning of the second.
These hopes and expectations were a bit premature, and were dashed by the Ouzo squad, that played as if they had all popped the little blue pill at halftime. Meanwhile the Pelican’s were fighting zero subs, and 115deg swealtering heat, and dehydration…but not Ouzo. They had some secret formula on their sideline that enabled them to play as if the first half didn’t exist.
Upon completion of the match, I went and looked up the definition and symptoms of dehydration, which are as follows:
Definition
“the body’s excessive loss of water.” It can be dangerous for life. Severe dehydration can be considered a medical emergency.
Symptoms:
1% dehydration leads to thirst.
2% dehydration causes feeling of anxiety, reduced appetite and capacity for work by 20%.
4% dehydration brings feeling of nausea, dizziness, emotional instability, fatigue.
6% dehydration leads to loss of coordination and coherence …

The Pelican’s squad was operating at 10% dehydration, but even still they battled on. Thirsty, nauseated, dizzy, and battling a general lack of coordination and coherence, they fell down one goal, followed by two and three. If not for the overall heart and determination of the squad the score would have been much worse. Kendall played a fantastic game, saving several break-aways, and rocket shots.
Thanks to Ryan, Bob as well, for stepping up and helping out significantly to the efforts. Unfortunately, the Pelican’s fell short in the end, falling 0-3, on goals that were really a result of the overall general fatigue. The first loss Ouzo in over two years. The pelicans were not outmatched, just outmanned in the end.
Just an FYI, I wrote this whole article while dehydrated, so if it makes a little sense, you can thank Mr. Clark, if it makes no sense, then you can blame Michael Clark.

Thus brings the end to a season rought with mediocrity. Finishing 6th in the table is no feat, but when looking at the injuries that were suffered throughout the season, and the players that stepped up from P’cheen, I think that there is plenty positive to take from the season. I look forward to doing battle with you all during the summer season and going into next year.
There will be some changes to some of the squads, and some additions to the squads, but all of them will be in order to make the club better and stronger.
Steve and Chuck, thanks for what you guys have contributed this season. Steve, we look forward to what is in store for the offseason and next year, and know that it will be in the best interests club.

Pelicans Soar, defeating Wings 3-1

Posted by Josh Abebe at May 6, 2010 8:06AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Decatur, GA (May 2, 2010) Today, I’m going to try to post and not offend anyone, but that’s highly unlikely.
On the heels of consecutive consecutive losses, the Pelican’s looked to rebound from the defeats with a victory over Wings. Agnes Scott’s pitch was trimmed to perfection, as the strip in the middle of the campus glowed with vibrant excitement.

The game started with Pelican’s dominating posession, and missing multiple shots on goal, and one-on-ones.
The break finally came about 15 minutes into the first half, where a streaking B-Halloway was met by a throughball played on the ground from Doug Johnson. Doug had previously beat 5 or 6 of the Wings attack and midfield, before securing a sneaky ball to Brian about 25 yards out. Halloway intensely finished in the side panel, and the Pelican’s were up early. Continuing to dominate posession, the Pelican’s went into the half confident, but needing the next goal to attempt to put this one under on the strip.

The second half started similar to the way first half ended. Pelican’s match posession dominated the single minded play of the opponents. Wings did have one of the single largest human soccer players south of the MISSISSIPPI. He threatened with a few runs, but a fit and Caribean Matt Rickets was sure to shut down any run that he started.

Pelican’s went up with a second goal about mid way through the second half, as Lawrence, who had been playing sexy balls all game on corners and set pieces, placed a well timed through ball to The Luqman. Although Luqman had missed 7 breakaways earlier in the half, and an additional 7 breakaways after this one…he made sure of this strike, slotting it into the side panel. 9 of those 14 saves by the Wings keeper were instinctual, but non the less brilliant.

Wings got on the board shortly later, by a laser beam strike from 25 yards out from the outside midfielder only to be known as Yakubu. A great strike that would have been saved by no one. The goal was against the run of play. Score 2-1 Pelicans.

The game quickly wrapped up as the Pelican’s continued to attack, giving up few opportunities on the defensive, but having many opportunities attacking forward. The final strike came at the stroke of midnight on the Agnes strip. Lawrence called his shot off of a corner kick, and the header was placed with precision down the middle of the goal by Josh Abebe. A great goal, surpassed only by the delivery.

Final score 3-1, Pelican’s with a dominating victory, and looking to continue the streak of 1, closing out the final games of the season.

The best posession we have seen all year, let’s keep it up.
Cheers,
Hero

Somewhere just south of the Tennessee border, GA (April 18, 2010) — Jakub Madej and James Powley scored for Stars, which is seeking to become the second division champion for the first time since entering the league and the Pelicans continued to frustrate themselves with poor finishing.

Pelicans FC appeared fatigued as the game went on, perhaps from a “450-mile bus trip” the team was forced to take to get to Stars Soccer. Stars SC would get a crucial 3-1 win over Pelicans to go top of the table.

The match would remain scoreless until midway through the first half. Stars took the lead off a dangerous through ball with a flick passed the oncoming Pelicans keeper. The Pelicans tried to equalize in the first half with several close chances placed just wide or shot directly at the keeper. With the Pelicans continuing to push the attack Stars was able to counter and notch a late first half goal by forward Jakub Madej, putting the tally at 2-0 to finish the half.

The Pelicans started the second half determined to find the back of the net and created several early goal scoring opportunities. After several good attempts including a great turn and volley by Brel Clark, Bryan Hollaway got on the end of the a punt and with the Stars keeper rushing out he chipped the ball over him bringing the match back to 2-1. The Pelicans would continue to push for the equalizer, but were caught on a late counter attack that saw the ball go off the hand of the Pelicans keeper and into the back of the net. Mike Skurski played a great game stepping into the back late in the second half and helped shut down the Stars striker, but the damage was already done.

Pelicans FC co-captain and leading scorer, Josh “JopoSumbaHopo BopoBopo” Abebe, was almost suspended for the next match because of a late yellow card with the zebra egging him on to entice him into a red card.

The Pelicans FC next match is against Wings Select at Agnes Scott on 5/2. The last 2 games are critical and a must win attitude is prevalent throughout the clubs side. To get out of the 4 game slide, very uncharacteristic of a Pelicans squad, Brel Clark and Richard Murray will surely fire up the lads after a midseason transfer that saw them leave the Wings Select side to join Pelicans.

Traitors prevail

Posted by Lawrence Monroe at Mar 10, 2010 2:46PM PST ( 1 Comment )

Marietta, GA (March 7, 2010) – Decimated by injuries and out of towners, Screaming Pelicans fell 5-2 on Sunday against the younger Georgia Tech FC club. Screaming put in a gritty performance, and relied on new recruits Brel Clark and Richard Howard to provide some firepower up front and strength in the back respectively. The game was 0-0 late into the first half, with both teams getting some good chances, but nobody could find the back of the net. Former SPFC players Ivan the Terrible and Mexican Mike Ely anchored the midfield for Tech, but could not start anything for the home team. Steve Cantonis stood on his head the whole match, making several point blank saves when GT was already celebrating, but Tech finally broke through late in the first half, beating the offside trap and finishing via a headed cross. Down 1-0 at the half, Pelicans came out looking to equalize, but a botched call by the center ref changed the tone early, when a Tech forward had a beautiful give and go to himself off his hand lead to an easy tap in goal. The ref mentioned that he didn’t feel the forward gained an advantage by knocking the ball down with his hand, stunning all around him.

Pelicans continued to fight hard despite this set back, and pulled back a goal through a great through pass from Aleks to target man Brel, and a clinical finish, the first of two on the day. An unfortunate tweak of a bad ankle sent Bryce to the bench early minutes later, and left Pelicans with no more subs for the day. Tech used their youth and speed to their advantage and took control with 3 late goals before Brel finished low to the corner when fed by Luq on a perfect counter attack.

Screaming will look to get back on track this Sunday at Agnes Scott (1pm) against a Wings team that has been in a tailspin of their own. The new recruits will look to take out some frustration on their former teammates, and the return of other injured starters should prove to be enough to put the Pelicans back in the win column.
