Pelicans drop another, but look to turn it around Sunday

Posted by Pelicans FC - Manager on Apr 30 2010 at 09:30AM PDT in October 2009 to March 2010

Somewhere just south of the Tennessee border, GA (April 18, 2010) — Jakub Madej and James Powley scored for Stars, which is seeking to become the second division champion for the first time since entering the league and the Pelicans continued to frustrate themselves with poor finishing.

Pelicans FC appeared fatigued as the game went on, perhaps from a “450-mile bus trip” the team was forced to take to get to Stars Soccer. Stars SC would get a crucial 3-1 win over Pelicans to go top of the table.

The match would remain scoreless until midway through the first half. Stars took the lead off a dangerous through ball with a flick passed the oncoming Pelicans keeper. The Pelicans tried to equalize in the first half with several close chances placed just wide or shot directly at the keeper. With the Pelicans continuing to push the attack Stars was able to counter and notch a late first half goal by forward Jakub Madej, putting the tally at 2-0 to finish the half.

The Pelicans started the second half determined to find the back of the net and created several early goal scoring opportunities. After several good attempts including a great turn and volley by Brel Clark, Bryan Hollaway got on the end of the a punt and with the Stars keeper rushing out he chipped the ball over him bringing the match back to 2-1. The Pelicans would continue to push for the equalizer, but were caught on a late counter attack that saw the ball go off the hand of the Pelicans keeper and into the back of the net. Mike Skurski played a great game stepping into the back late in the second half and helped shut down the Stars striker, but the damage was already done.

Pelicans FC co-captain and leading scorer, Josh “JopoSumbaHopo BopoBopo” Abebe, was almost suspended for the next match because of a late yellow card with the zebra egging him on to entice him into a red card.

The Pelicans FC next match is against Wings Select at Agnes Scott on 5/2. The last 2 games are critical and a must win attitude is prevalent throughout the clubs side. To get out of the 4 game slide, very uncharacteristic of a Pelicans squad, Brel Clark and Richard Murray will surely fire up the lads after a midseason transfer that saw them leave the Wings Select side to join Pelicans.
